Pain in Lower Back Possibly Kidney Related

I was under the impression that a urinary tract infection, if left untreated can progress to the kidneys. Although this is not a common occurrence, it can happen. Most of the time urinary tract infections resolve on their own, but I was curious to see how back pain could related to conditions of the kidneys and the urinary tract. In my quest for more information, I searched the term lower back pain kidney to see what pages would be returned. I was surprised to discover that conditions of the kidneys can, indeed causes discomfort in the back and can also cause other symptoms such as urinary difficulties.
