In terms of creativity, universities could use some help

While I worked in the IT lab at my university I frequently came across server errors. Before I could even solve problems, I often dealt with a bureaucratic faculty and staff badgering me about email and website problems. Server errors are not my cup of tea.

I’ve heard of a few free website monitoring tools available. However, how does these systems work or large university IT department? Does anyone know of larger uptime monitoring solutions for a multi-networked campus? I know it’s not as easy as signing up for a service but there must be some answers to this predicament.
