New Star Wars Multiplayer Game Hits Market

A new massive multiplayer online game based on Star Wars is set to hit the market.  While unlikely that this game will be able to seriously compete with the mother of all massively multiplayer games, World of Warcraft, it is a Star Wars fan’s dream.

The Old Republic, produced by BioWare, was revealed today at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.  Reviews so far are solid.  A few complaints regarding a lack of originality were voiced though.  Some felt that the game played it safe and followed previous MMO models instead of being innovative and adding something new.

However, the bottom line is people enjoyed playing the game.  It takes place in the Star Wars universe and players belong to one of the eight classes available to choose from.  Two factions, the Republic who are the good guys are pinned against the Siths, the bad guys.  Each faction contains four different classes.  As you progress through the game you can achieve different advance classes, with each having three different skill trees, allowing players to define their characters.

One thing that does set this game apart is its in-depth story line.  Typically games, World of Warcraft included, breeze right through this part and go straight for the combat. Here, each class has its own distinctive story and choices a player makes can alter and affect those stories.  BioWare is hopefully that this will give them an edge, allowing them to court some World of Warcraft subscribers.
